Are you excited for the BEST tea and toast you’ve ever had?

When I was pregnant I can remember experienced mums talking about about the tea and toast that you’re given when you move to the postnatal ward. I had high expectations.

🍞 I’m here to say; you do not have to feel grateful for a slice of crispy bread to butter yourself. 🍞

The lightly toasted, medium white slice of kingsmill, served alongside a golden rectangle of wrapped butter and a knife, and a mug of milky tea was underwhelming, to say the least. During my overnight stay I was pretty hungry and delighted when they called out it was breakfast time, swiftly replaced by annoyance when I realised I had to walk to another room and sit with women I didn’t know and eat weetabix when I was feeling a bit emotional, fragile and overwhelmed.

After birth you’re tired, depleted of nutrients and your bowels empty.

You need warm, soft, easily digested foods that nourish and re-energise your body. You need iron, bone broth, slow cooked meats, soups, softened vegetables.

As your birth or postnatal doula, when I’m with you after birth I can visit bringing some delicious APPROPRIATE foods to help give you more energy, feel more comfortable and support your healing. I can stop by your favourite cafe and pick up your regular order.

I can make toast too, but frankly, you deserve better.

I understand the NHS are catering(?) for the masses and toast is a cheap, crowd pleaser, I think they even offer jam portions, but think if it’s really what you want and need after labour and birth.
